 LIFE  began on November 23, 1936 as a weekly magazine. The dam in Fort Peck, Montana was pictured on the front cover. This is a picture of the birth of a baby, the title is " LIFE  BEGINS." This picture caused quit a bit of controversy, but was just what the editors wanted and needed.

 LIFE  continued for 36 years covering World War II, Korea, Viet Nam, movie stars, disasters and tragedy, while never losing it's focus and original format of reporting on the average person doing his daily routine.

The last weekly  LIFE  was published on December 22, 1972. For the next five years  LIFE  published ten magazine specials.

 LIFE  began publishing monthly in October, 1978 and continued until May, 2000.  LIFE  published over 2,000 weekly and monthly issues during it's 66 years.

To see life; to see the world; to eyewitness great events; to watch the faces of the poor and the gestures of the proud; to see strange things -- machines, armies, multitudes, shadows in the jungle and on the moon; to see man's work -- his paintings, towers and discoveries; to see things thousands of miles away, things hidden behind walls and within rooms, things dangerous to come to; the women men love and many children; to see and to take pleasure in seeing; to see and be amazed; to see and be instructed...
